The AAUW Greater Wayne Area Branch Scholarship Committee awards annual scholarships for women returning to college to complete an initial associate’s or bachelor’s degree. The scholarships are intended to help ease the burden of college expenses for the recipients. Scholarship recipients are selected by the AAUW Greater Wayne Branch scholarship committee.
The scholarship committee met in April 2017, and selected two deserving scholarship winners for 2017. Each winner received a $1200 scholarship from our branch. In addition, our branch contributed $500 to AAUW National, through The AAUW Fund, which provides financial support where it is most needed.
Our first 2017 winner, Jennifer Helminski, attends Rutgers University, where she has a double major in Geography and Religion. She anticipates completing her BA in 2018. Jennifer is currently beginning her honors thesis at Rutgers, where she is studying connections between geopolitics, colonial and religious history and ecological pressures. Jennifer plans on continuing her studies in graduate school, focusing on human rights, social justice and geopolitics. Jennifer was a recipient of a Rutgers Academic Excellence Award in her sophomore year. Jennifer has relied entirely on financial aid to support her studies at Rutgers. She currently works a few hours every week at the Rutgers Climate Institute, and is most grateful for the scholarship support from our branch.
Our second 2017 winner, Marisol De La Paz, attends Ramapo College, where she is majoring in Social Science, and anticipates receiving her BA in 2018. She plans on eventually obtaining an MSW and working with hospital patients, while continuing to assist those in her community. Marisol’s family currently has three family members attending college at the same time, including her husband, her older son and herself. Marisol and her older son hope to graduate together from Ramapo College in 2018. In addition, her younger son has been diagnosed with autism, and Marisol is a volunteer for Autism Speaks. Marisol expressed her thanks to our members for the scholarship.
